Pirates Begin with big win


Pirates open district with blowout win

The Granbury Pirates used a hot shooting night from the field and the free throw line to open District 7-4A basketball with a convincing 74-48 victory against Fort Worth Western Hills at Billingsley Field House Tuesday.
The Pirates (8-6 overall) went on a 20-6 run over the course of the second period to take a commanding 37-19 halftime advantage.

County Commissioners vote for 90-day burn ban

At their meeting held Tuesday morning (Dec. 11), county commissioners voted to place Hood County under a 90-day burn ban because of the increasing fire danger in this area, according to Fire Marshal Brian Fine. The vote also banned “sticks and fins” fireworks during that time period, Fine added, which of course will affect some New Year’s Eve celebrations.

Low temperatures below freezing are expected tonight (Sunday, Dec. 9), and each night through Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service in Fort Worth. Tonight’s low is predicted at 27, with wind gusts up to 30 mph. The lows Monday night through Wednesday night are expected to be 20, 26 and 30. The NWS predicts a 20 percent chance of rain Thursday night, and a 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms Friday and Friday night.

The Lake Granbury Kiwanis Club honored several Hood County Students

The Lake Granbury Kiwanis Club honored several Hood County fourth and fifth graders as Super Citizens during a luncheon on October 11, 2012. 
Kiwanis Club The community service organization recognizes two fourth graders and two fifth graders several times during the school year. The students are nominated by their teachers for good citizenship. 
Granbury students who were honored were: 
  • Acton Elementary School – 4th grade: Emily Huff, Russel Moore; 5th grade: Kyler Gibson, Mackenzie McLendon
  • Baccus Elementary School – 4th grade: Tyler Ellis, Hector Morales; 5th grade: Ashley Garcia, Jay Martin
  • Brawner Intermediate School – 4th grade: Carrie Landrum, Madelyn Lane; 5th grade: Citlalli Arriaga, Caitlyn Green
  • Mambrino School – 4th grade: Benny Lara, Sidney Stephenson; 5th grade: Asher Felty, Makayla Woody
  • Oak Woods School – 4th grade: Adam Dillivan, Jonathan Rositas; 5th grade: Madison Emerson, Trevaun Hughes
Acton principal Anna Roe, Baccus principal Trisha Suitt, Brawner assistant principal Brian Tewell, Mambrino principal Dana Goode, and Oak Woods counselor Holli Moore introduced their students and read the nomination letters submitted by teachers. 
In addition to Super Citizens, the Kiwanis Club recognizes many Granbury elementary students through the Terrific Kids program. Members also sponsor the Key Club at Granbury High School and elementary K-Kids clubs.
